PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland freshman Darian Slaga registered a double-double and the Pilots led San Diego late in the third quarter, but the Toreros rallied before holding on for a 77-67 win in the West Coast Conference women's basketball regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. Slaga had career-highs in both points (19) and rebounds (10) to claim the first double-double by a Portland player this season.
Â
The first half was back-and-forth as the Pilots (3-26, 1-17 WCC) opened the game on fire from the field. Trailing by two points late in the first quarter, Holly Blades drilled a deep three-pointer to give Portland its first lead of the game. The two teams then exchanged buckets, with Ashley Gray converting down low on consecutive possessions, but the Toreros (23-6, 13-5 WCC) claimed a slight 19-18 edge at the end of the frame.
Â
The Pilots then found themselves trailing by five points in the second period, but Portland refused to falter and soon led their visitors by five. With 4:13 left in the half, Kaylie Van Loo and Corissa Turley converted back-to-back traditional three-point plays, which sparked an 8-0 Portland run.
Â
Moments later Turley recorded yet another three-point play, and just like that the Pilots led 36-31. The Toreros recovered a little before the halftime buzzer, but the Pilots entered the locker room leading 38-37.
Â
The Pilots carried their lead into the third quarter as the Pilots continued to connect from the field. Van Loo then carried on the theme from the first half with another three-point play five minutes in, and Sara Zaragoza followed with a mid-range jumper, on a nice feed from Turley, to give Portland a 49-45 advantage.
Â
But that's when the Toreros increased their defensive pressure, forcing Portland into making some costly turnovers to fuel a 12-0 outburst. Now leading by eight, San Diego continued their run into the final quarter and pushed the difference to double digits.
Â
The Pilots tried to hang around, with the help of Slaga's career-high in points. She buried a three-pointer with about a minute left to cut into the deficit, but the Toreros made enough free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Â
Slaga hit three of five from beyond the three-point arc and shot 8-for-13 overall. The 10 rebounds are a season-high for a Pilot this season. Van Loo just missed matching a career-high with 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting. She was a perfect 4-for-4 on free throws as the Pilots went 9-for-9 as a team.
Â
The Pilots were north of 50 percent shooting during the first half and finished at 47.3 for the game. Portland also totaled six three-pointers.
Â
San Diego committed just five turnovers, while forcing the Pilots into 15 miscues. The Toreros shot 43.5 percent, went 18 of 23 at the line, combined for five three's and held a decisive 19-5 edge in points off of turnovers. Maya Hood led the way with a game-high 24 points, while also corralling 10 boards.
Â
The Pilots next head to Las Vegas, Nev., for the 2016 WCC Championships. The Pilots will open the tourney on Thursday afternoon against the Loyola Marymount Lions, with tip-off set for 2 p.m. at the Orleans Arena.
