LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Portland matched a season-high with 15 three-pointers and raced to a 92-78 West Coast Conference victory over the Loyola Marymount Lions Saturday afternoon at Gersten Pavilion. The win completes a season sweep and a weekend road sweep after Portland knocked off Pepperdine on Thursday. It marks the first Los Angeles road sweep since the 2009 season.
Junior point guard Alec Wintering led the Pilots (11-15, 5-8 WCC) with 29 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore guard D'Marques Tyson continued his torrid shooting with 23 points, including 6-of-12 from three-point range. Tyson also collected a career-high eight rebounds.
The balanced Pilots also got 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists from Bryce Pressley and a phenomenal all-around performance from junior forward Jarrel Marshall off the bench. Marshall finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots. That followed his first double-double of the season Thursday at Pepperdine.
The Lions (10-14, 3-10) were led by Adom Jacko with 35 points and seven rebounds. Joshua Spiers added 11 points.
Both teams shot well in the first half as Wintering beat the halftime buzzer with a three-pointer to tie the game at 46-46.
Portland continued its hot shooting in the second period, while LMU was held to 39 percent shooting in the second half.
The Pilots drilled three consecutive three-pointers to ignite a 9-0 run and take a 68-54 lead with 12:45 left. Portland's margin would grow to as much as 18 points late and a double-digit margin was maintained until the final horn.
The 15 three-pointers made matched Portland's output against Alcorn State earlier this year and was one off the school's record. It also tied the second most threes made in Gersten Pavilion history. Portland's 26 assists also were a season-high.
The Pilots shot 53 percent overall and held LMU to 44 percent. Portland also gained a 40-28 rebounding edge.
Portland will look to extend its win streak when the Gonzaga Bulldogs visit the Chiles Center on Thursday for an 8 p.m. tip-off. The game is sold out, but will be televised nationally on ESPNU. Radio coverage will begin at 7:30 p.m. on 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT).
