PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No. 3 Oregon State Beavers jumped out to an early lead before outlasting the Portland Pilots 13-6 in a non-conference baseball game played on Tuesday night in front of the largest crowd in Joe Etzel Field history. Caleb Whalen went yard for the Pilots in the loss, his third long fly of the year, and Michael Forgione went 3-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored.
Â
The crowd of 1,092 surpassed the previous high of 1,002, which was set back in 2007 also against the Beavers.
Â
The Beavers (16-2) scored three runs in the top of the second inning and three more in the third to take control of the game. All six runs came with two outs, and Jack Anderson provided the game's first run with an RBI double. A few batters later Kyle Nobach sent a two-run single to center field, and just like that the score was 3-0.
Â
In the second, K.J. Harrison tallied an RBI double before two more runs scored on an error.
Â
Portland (11-9) got one back in the bottom of the third inning after Ryan Barr kept a lengthy at-bat going by fouling off several pitches. Barr then struck out, but reached first base safely when the pitch was in the dirt and got away from catcher Michael Gretler. The wild pitch allowed Forgione to trot home from third, briefly pulling the Pilots with five.
Â
The Beavs responded and would push the lead to 10-1 by scoring two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth.
Â
Whalen provided some excitement in the fifth when he drilled a home run deep over the left field fence. His homer came with a runner on, as he increases his team-best RBI total to 18.
Â
OSU again had an answer again, this time pushing two more runs across in the sixth, courtesy a two-run double by Cadyn Grenier.
Â
Those runs were needed as the Pilots scored twice more the following inning. With the bases loaded, Forgione recorded his third hit of the night, which was a single to left field that scored Kevin Farley and Brady Kerr. The Beavs then switched pitchers, and John Pomeroy promptly threw a wild pitch that let Geoffrey Lee score to make it a 12-6 game.
Â
OSU's final run of the night was an unearned tally in the seventh.
Â
The Pilots used six pitchers on the night, with the loss going to starter Cole Doherty (1-2), who was charged with those six early runs. Relievers Jake Hawken, Alex Fisher and Jackson Lockwood each pitched a scoreless inning of relief, with Fisher striking out three during his inning of work.
Â
Oregon State, which out-hit the Pilots 14-8, countered with four pitchers. Starter Bryce Fehmel (5-0) stays perfect on the year, and Scott Church tossed three scoreless innings to earn his first career save.
Â
The Pilots next welcome the Cal State Northridge Matadors to town for a four-game series. The non-conference series begins with a double header at Joe Etzel Field on Thursday, which will begin at 3 p.m. The two teams will then play on Friday night in Hillsboro at Ron Tonkin field, with first pitch set for 7 p.m. Saturday's finale will be back on the UP campus at noon.
