SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The No. 31 San Diego Toreros earned a 4-0 win over the Portland Pilots in West Coast Conference men's tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center. The Toreros improve to 13-7 overall and 2-0 in WCC play, while the Pilots fall to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in league action.
San Diego won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to win the opening point. Portland's top doubles tandem of sophomores Michail Pervolarakis and Mathieu Garcia were tied 4-4 against the No. 70 ranked duo in the nation, Uros Petronijevic and Filip Vittek when the point was clinched.
The youthful Pilots then battled in singles play. Featuring a lineup of four sophomores and two freshmen against a senior-laden Toreros squad, Portland competed. Freshman Felix Fan was up a set and 4-1 in the second when the match was clinched. Mathieu Garcia forced a third set at No. 2 singles against Jordan Angus, ranked No. 79 nationally in singles. Pervolarakis dropped the first set against No. 39 Petronijevic, but was tied 5-5 in the second when San Diego clinched. Alex Wallace lost in three sets at the No. 4 spot for the Pilots.
"The perspective I tried to stress to the players after the match was that we lost to the best team in the conference, who's four of the top six players are seniors," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "It was our first match outdoors of the season and was on their home court. All of that being said I think we gave a good performance based on the situation. Felix was up a set and 4-1 in the second. Mathieu was just getting going in the third set with an excellent player. Mike and Alex both battled. Today was something that we can build on going forward. I think the experience was good and will help prepare us for what's to come."
Portland will stay in San Diego and face Marquette in a non-conference matchup Sunday at 10 a.m.
