Meet Information I
Pilots at the NCAA West Regional Release
LAWRENCE, Kans. --- Junior javelin thrower Kaylie Van Loo started the NCAA Western Preliminary Championships strong for the Portland Pilots men's and women's track & field teams before lightning delayed the competition at Rock Chalk Park on the University of Kansas campus on Thursday afternoon.
The javelin competition began Thursday morning with Van Loo being the second thrower of the second flight. She took the lead after her third and final throw landed at 167'8. This throw is not only over a six foot PR, but also a program record.
Due to inclement weather, all competitions were postponed until Friday, May 27 with 16 student-athletes left to throw their final javelin. With Van Loo still sitting in the top spot and the top 12 finishers advancing to the NCAA National Championships, her score will just have to beat out four of tomorrow's throwers to advance.
"We are incredibly proud of Kaylie," said throwing coach Chad Colwell. "Hopefully it is a mark that will get her to the Championships. She has been having some big throws in practice recently, but for her to finally get one in a meet is exciting; especially with the NCAAs on the line."
Other members of the men's and women's track & field teams were also scheduled to compete in the men's 1,500m and the men's and women's 10,000m on Thursday.
The women's 10,000m has been rescheduled for Friday, May 27 at 8:00 a.m. (6:00 a.m. PST) and the men's will follow at 8:40 a.m. (6:40 a.m. PST).
