LAWRENCE, Kans. --- Woody Kincaid became the fourth Portland Pilot to qualify for the NCAA Track & Field National Championship during the final day of the NCAA West Regional. Kincaid was the top finisher for a second year in a row in the men's 5,000m with a time of 14:09.13.
Kincaid joins Reid Buchanan, Lauren LaRocco, and Kaylie Van Loo who will all make the trip down to Eugene, Ore. on June 8-11 to compete against the best in the country at Nationals. Four Pilots ties the most ever qualifying for Nationals; a mark that was reached in 1995 and again last year.
At Nationals last year, Kincaid took 5
th in the 5,000m. He will look to improve his position in his final race as a Pilot in two weeks.
"Woody obviously had a great race," said men's head track & field coach Rob Conner. "He hasn't raced for four weeks so we were happy that he ran easy and felt good."
Timo Goehler and Nick Hauger also raced in the 5,000m. Goehler—after competing in the 10,000m the day before—finished with a time of 14:51.99 and Haugher crossed the line in 14:53.43.
Jeff Thies was the solo Pilot in the men's 1,500m. He placed 15
th overall and was just .32 seconds away from qualifying.
"Thies ran a terrific race," stated Conner. "Tactically he was perfect. He was just off qualifying which is great especially considering how new he is to the event. He was also just a few tenths of a second off his PR. That was only his third 1,500m of the year; huge upside there."
On the women's side, LaRocco took 9
th in the 5,000m with a time of 16:21.09. This mark qualifies her for nationals in another event, as she had already booked her ticket after placing in the top 12 of the 10,000m.
Parkes Kendrick, Anna Farello, and Ann Luijten also competed in the 5,000m race. Kendrick finished her first season of collegiate running with a 16
th place finish and a time of 16:38.52. Farello and Luijten recorded times of 16:55.60 and 17:09.02, respectively.
Four qualifying Pilots will next be in action at the NCAA National Championship on June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
