EUGENE, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's track & field teams spent the day at historic Hayward Field for the Oregon Twilight Invitational. Only the short and mid distance runners took the track for the Pilots, along with Kaylie Van Loo competing in the javelin and Courtney Vacek in the triple jump.
Â
Van Loo and Vacek both competed well in their respective events, with Van Loo finishing on top of the field with a throw of 161'3''. This is Van Loo's second weekend in a row placing first in javelin, with both throws over 160'. This is Van Loo's first time winning at Hayward Field since her sophomore year of high school when she was the Oregon 5A State Champion.
Â
"Van Loo has been throwing really well," said Portland coach Chad Colwell. "Her technique has improved so much from last year, and for her to throw as well as she did today into a headwind is really exciting for throws later this month."
Â
Vacek jumped a distance of 38' 1.25'', which was good enough for a fifth-place finish.
Â
