Today marks the beginning of the USA Track & Field Olympic Trials at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., and the University of Portland will be represented by a trio of athletes. The top track and field athletes in the country will compete from July 1-10 for a place on the US Track & Field team at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August. The top three finishers in each event will earn a spot on team USA. Â
Â
2015 graduate Scott Fauble will first be competing at the Trials tonight in the 10,000m. Fauble had a stellar career at Portland, leading the Pilots to a third place podium finish at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships. During his senior year, he made his debut in the half marathon running a time of 1:03:59, earning him a qualifying spot in the 2016 Olympic Trials Marathon. In July of 2015 he signed to run professionally with HOKA NAZ Elite, and then in December he placed third at the 2016 Great Edinburgh XC Challenge behind American Garrett Heath and double Gold Medalist Mo Farah of Great Britain. Â
Â
"Scott has put in a lot of work and improved at an unbelievably rapid rate," said Portland head coach Rob Conner. "He dropped his 10,000 PR nearly :45 this season! He was probably the best big meet runner in Pilot history, so I expect he is going to be in the mix on Friday because he's a gamer. Although it would be shocking to the rest of the nation, it wouldn't surprise me one bit for him to finish in the top three. He is in phenomenal shape and is not going to take no for an answer."Â
The 10,000m final is scheduled for tonight at 6:15 p.m live on nbcsports.com and will be broadcasted on NBC at 9pm. Â
Â
Last week, UP's Woody Kincaid outkicked Galen Rupp at the Stumptown Twilight in the 5,000m, setting a new school record and qualifying for Olympic trials with his time of 13:27:32.Â
Â
"Woody set some major goals this year and one of those goals was the lofty goal to qualify for the Olympic Trials," said Conner. "Upon qualifying he immediately set a new goal of making the finals of the 5000. He is very goal oriented and he is just now rounding into top shape. The goal is to make the final and I know he can do that."Â
Kincaid will race in the first round of the 5,000m, which is scheduled for Monday, July 4 at 5:02 p.m.Â
Â
Fauble and Kincaid are the fourth and fifth UP athletes in history to earn a place at the Olympic Track & Field Trials, following alums Todd Davis ('99), who competed in the steeplechase in 1996, and Michael Kilburg ('08) and John Moore ('08), who both competed in the 10,000m in 2008. Â
Â
Portland junior Kaylie Van Loo potentially could be competing as well, as she is currently on standby for the javelin, with her best throw only 1.75 inches shy of qualifying for the meet. She sits just out of the top-24qualifiers and will be entered into the event if any other participant can't compete. She set a new school record this spring with distance of 51.12m (167'9) at the NCAA Regionals and is ranked as one of the top collegiate female throwers in the US at all levels. Â
Â
Van Loo will potentially compete in the qualifying round of the javelin throw at 3:30pm on July 7.
Â
The trials will be broadcasted on NBC and streamed at NBCsports.com.
