PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland men's soccer program picked up a marquee early season win with a 2-0 victory over No. 25 Ohio State Friday night in the first game of the Nike Portland Invitational before 2,082 fans and a raucous student section at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex.
Freshman Gio Magana-Rivera and junior Erik Edwardson scored the Pilot goals, while sophomore Jackson Jellah logged a pair of assists.
Jellah, who scored the first three goals of the season for the Pilots last weekend, has now played a part in all five Portland goals this season.
"I was very proud of our entire program as we had a good collective performance tonight," said Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt. "We are only starting to scratch the surface with this young team and will continue to drive the players to reach their full potential as a group. Our players earned the result tonight as we controlled a large portion of the game. We have to quickly move forward as we prepare for an excellent San Jose State team."
The Pilots (2-1-0) controlled the game from start-to-finish, racking up numerous first half chances but entering halftime still scoreless.
Magana-Rivera, a native of Hood River, Ore., and Portland Timbers Academy standout, lit the scoreboard for the first time in the 67th minute for the eventual game-winner. He received the ball at the top of the box and deftly navigated between three defenders with a couple of savvy touches before slotting his shot from the left side inside the right post.
Jellah provided the assist after settling a long service from the Pilot back line and springing Magana-Rivera free.
Portland doubled the margin in the 77th minute as Jellah's curling shot from the left side of the box ricocheted off the right post and bounced back across the goal mouth where sophomore Erik Edwardson tapped it in for his first goal of the season.
The Pilots gained a 14-10 margin in shots and 7-2 edge in corner kicks. The Buckeyes (0-3-0), who reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament a year ago, played the final eight minutes a man down after Yaw Amankwa was shown a red card for dissent.
"I would like to thank our loyal fans, alumni, faculty and administration for their support," added Carlin-Voigt. "Our coaching staff and players greatly appreciate our amazing student section for their support and energy."
The Pilots will conclude the Nike Portland Invitational on Sunday when they host the San Jose State Spartans. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. and broadcast by the Portland Sports Network on TheW.tv.
