PORTLAND, ORE. --- The Portland Pilots dominated their first home West Coast Conference match against the San Francisco Dons with a convincing 3-0 sweep Thursday night in the Chiles Center. The Pilots took the three consecutive sets with scores of 25-19, 25-8, and 25-18.
The Pilots (9-6, 2-1 WCC) started off the first set on a five-point run to lead 8-3. USF (4-13, 0-4 WCC) slowed Portland's momentum with kills from the Dons' kill leaders Emily Reed and Tyna Adamcikova. The Pilots then added three consecutive kills to widen the gap by six, followed by another six point run make the score 18-10. The Dons responded with back to back kills from Reed, to try and close the gap followed by a short point run, but Reghan Pukis finished up the set with a decisive kill ending the set 25-19. Katie Sullivan got off to a solid start, registering six kills in the first set.
Hannah Troutman opened up the second set with a pair of kills and Sarah Savoca added a ace to set the tone and spark an eight-point run. The Pilots kept the momentum going with additional kills from Savoca, Troutman, and Brittney Markwith to bring the score to 16-6. Markwith and Sullivan then combined to register a huge block, which was followed by another kill from Troutman and ace from Savoca. Troutman then finished claimed the set point with a service ace as the Pilots won convincingly 25-8.
Again to start the third set, the Pilots began with another run to make it 5-1. The Dons rallied to take three consecutive points of their own to close the gap, but Portland responded with kills from Pukis and Sullivan to slow the Dons momentum, bringing the set to 11-6. USF then put together two three-point runs to try to keep it close, but Sullivan and Monica Gajda combined to help the Pilots maintain a lead with a kill and an ace. Savoca then made a crucial dig to rally the Pilots in the last few points of the set, and Troutman finished up the set 25-18 with a powerful kill.
Troutman and Sullivan both registered double-digit kills with 17 and 12, respectively. Sullivan didn't make a single attacking error all night to record an impressive .706 hit percentage. Gajda notched 11 digs and Cali Thompson 37 assists.
The Pilots will next be in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Santa Clara in the Chiles Center.
