PORTLAND, Ore. – Brandon Brown made a driving lay-up with five seconds left in regulation as the Loyola Marymount Lions pulled off a late comeback to beat the Portland Pilots by a 79-78 margin Saturday night in West Coast Conference action at the Chiles Center.
Alec Wintering went coast-to-coast on the ensuing inbounds, but his runner was tipped as the Lions (9-8, 2-4 WCC) overcame a five point deficit in the final 45 seconds to stun the host Pilots (9-8, 2-3).
Wintering scored a game-high 22 points, while Jazz Johnson added 15 for Portland. Sophomore Rashad Jackson added a career-high 11 points, all in the second half.
Steven Haney led four Lions in double figures with 18 points, but it was Brown that made most of the key plays late. After being saddled with two early fouls and relegated to the bench for most of the first half, Brown scored 13 of his 16 points in the second period including six of LMU's final eight points.
Johnson and Jackson buried back-to-back three-pointers to give the Pilots 69-64 lead after Portland trailed by as much as nine points early in the second half. A Ray Barreno tip-in made it 75-69 with 1:42 left.
The Lions cut it to two after lay-ups by Brown and Shamar Johnson, but Johnson drilled another three-pointer to give the Pilots a five-point lead with 52 seconds left. Brown followed with a jumper and then LMU got a steal on the next possession. After LMU missed a breakaway dunk, Brown got the rebound tried to tie it with a three-pointer. He missed, but Kelvin Amayo converted the putback to make it a 78-77 deficit.
The Pilots committed an offensive foul while trying to inbound with 27 seconds left and gave LMU a chance to win the game. The Lions had a broken offensive set and Brown made the most of it with his late penetration and reverse lay-up in traffic. Shamar Johnson made the defensive stop at the other end to secure the win for LMU.
Portland committed just seven turnovers in the game, but three came in the final 90 seconds. The game featured seven ties and 12 lead changes.
The Lions shot 53 percent from the field, but made just 10-of-22 free throws, while Portlnad finished at 42 percent overall and 24-of-28 at the foul line.
Portland will continue WCC play next week with a Thursday road game at San Francisco. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game broadcast will be available on TheW.tv. The Pilots will then visit No. 5 Gonzaga on Saturday at 5 p.m. before returning home to host Gonzaga on Monday, Jan. 23 at 5 p.m. Both of those games will be televised live on ROOT Sports Northwest, while all Pilot games have radio coverage on 910 ESPN-Portland (KMTT).
