PORTLAND, Ore. – The No. 3 Gonzaga Bulldogs remained the only unbeaten team in the nation following an 83-64 victory over the Portland Pilots Monday night at the Chiles Center. The teams took the court for the second time in less than 48 hours after the Bulldogs defeated the Pilots in Spokane, Wash. on Saturday night.
Monday's game served as a make-up for the January 7th game that was postponed due to inclement weather in Portland.
The 19-point loss was the narrowest margin of victory for the Zags (20-0, 8-0 WCC) against any West Coast Conference opponent this season. Gonzaga beat the Pilots by 21 points on Saturday.
The Pilots (9-11, 2-6) were without team leader Alec Wintering for both games after suffering a torn ACL in Thursday's game at San Francisco. Portland's senior captain will be lost for the season due to the injury.
Sophomore guard Rashad Jackson scored a career-high 15 points and junior guard D'Marques Tyson added 15 points off the bench to lead the Pilots. Sophomore guard Jazz Johnson chipped in 10 and has now reached double figures in all 20 games this season.
Portland once again showed moxie and fight despite being shorthanded. After falling behind 9-0 to open the game, the Pilots battled back and consecutive three-pointers by Jackson made it 22-19 with 7:38 left in the first half, but the Zags closed the period with a 38-23 lead.
An 18-0 run late through the first half and into the early part of the second half gave the Zags control. The margin would grow to as much as 33 points midway through the period before the Pilots finished strong at the end.
Freshman Zach Collins led four Zags in double figures with 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench. A total of 12 Gonzaga players scored on the night.
Gonzaga shot 52 percent from the field, while the Pilots finished at 36 percent overall. Portland committed just 10 turnovers and was again solid on the boards against the bigger Bulldogs. Gonzaga held a 41-36 rebounding margin, but the Pilots had a 12-9 edge in offensive rebounds.
Portland will return to action on Thursday at Pepperdine for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. The Pilots will then return to Portland to host the San Diego Toreros on Saturday at 7 p.m. Tickets for all remaining home games are available by visiting
