SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Gio Magana-Rivera scored for the Pilots in the first half, the Toreros equalized in the second half, and Portland and San Diego would eventually settle for a 1-1 draw in a West Coast Conference men's soccer game played on Friday night at Torero Stadium. The Pilots played the final 33 minutes a man-down after a red card was shown to Jason Romero in the 77th minute.
Â
Magana-Rivera gave the visiting side a 1-nil advantage in the 17th minute with his third goal of the season. Rey Ortiz set up the goal when he played the ball to Eric de Graaf on an overlap, and de Graaf whipped in a cross towards the right post. That's where Erik Edwardson flicked it on, and the ball found the feet of Magana-Rivera, who provided a composed finish to make it 1-0.
Â
From there the Pilots would control possession, and in 43rd minute Benji Michel sent a header high of the crossbar on a free kick sent in by Romero.
Â
Portland would continue to create chances after the break, and in the 60th minute Michel drove a well-struck shot towards the left corner of the net. The attempt was denied by San Diego goalkeeper Thomas Olsen, which would prove to be the first of a handful of game-saving stops.
Â
The San Diego equalizer came against the run of play in the 64th minute when they capitalized on a Portland player slipping on the uneven playing surface, which provided space for USD's Miguel Berry. Berry reached the endline with possession before finding an unmarked Djordje Babic, who buried shot to even the score 1-1.
Â
The Toreros then caught a break when Romero was shown a straight red card after getting tangled with a San Diego player, but it was the Pilots who created a handful of opportunities during the final minutes of regulation. Twice Edwardson nearly provided the game-winner for the Pilots, but both times Olsen came through with a clutch save as the game went to overtime.
Â
Neither team had much of a scoring opportunity during the first extra period, and Ortiz sent in a dangerous ball on a free kick in the 104th minute. But the Pilots couldn't connect on the final touch, and the ball would be corralled by Olsen as the clock would soon run out.
Â
The Pilots and Toreros entered the night tied for first place on top of the WCC standings. Portland is now 6-5-1 overall on the year, and 1-0-1 in the conference. The Toreros move to 6-3-2 and are also 1-0-1 in the WCC.
Â
The Pilots remain on the road next week when they return to Southern California for a WCC match against the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday night. Kickoff at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles is set for 7 p.m.
