LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Portland freshman Taryn Ries scored her first career goal in the 104th minute as the Pilots claimed a dramatic 2-1 win over the Loyola Marymount Lions in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game played on Saturday night at Sullivan Field. Lucy Davidson assisted on the winner, and Portland goalkeeper Rachel Lusby was stellar in goal, providing 11 saves on the night.
Â
With the game tied 1-1 in the second extra period, Davidson sent a short pass to Ries inside the 18-yard box. Ries did the rest, staying composed and finishing past the LMU (6-5-3, 1-3-0 WCC) keeper to send the Pilots home victorious.
"It was great to see us finish some of the chances we've been creating all season and to get the W", Portland head coach Garrett Smith said following the win. "To come down here and win on the road is a great sign of the true competitive spirit from this team in a frustrating season."
Â
It was the second straight overtime game for the Pilots (4-10-1, 1-4-0 WCC), who were the aggressive team early, attempting the match's first three shots. Kimberly Hazlett and Hannah Griffiths Boston hit shots wide, while Ries has a shot saved by LMU goalie Charlee Pruitt. All three attempts came within the first six minutes of the opening whistle.
Â
From there the game opened up as both teams created chances. Lusby came through with a handful of saves to keep the game scoreless, and the Pilots' Ellie Winkelmann hit one high as the two sides entered the locker room at half tied 0-0.
Â
It was Ariel Viera who scored Portland's first goal to give the Pilots the 1-0 lead in the 60th minute. Her first goal of the year came after the Pilots withstood some pressure from the Lions. The ball came in from the right, and Viera provided the tremendous finish into the top shelf to hand the Pilots the advantage. Griffiths Boston notched the assist after heading it across the six-yard box to Viera.
Â
After that the Pilots looked to add to their lead, but Pruitt produced a couple of game-saving stops. In the 65th minute Griffiths Boston had a shot denied by the keeper, and moments later Pruitt made an identical diving stop on a hit by Hazlett.
Â
LMU was then able to equalize courtesy a free kick in the 76th minute. On a scramble in the box, the ball eventually found the feet of Phoebe Riley, and she found the back of the net to level the score 1-1.
Â
The Pilots looked for an immediate response at the other end of the field, but the long-range effort from Larkin Russell found the arms of Pruitt. Later Hazlett struck one that took a deflection before being corralled by Pruitt.
Â
And then in the 88th minute, it was Lusby's turn to make a clutch save when she denied a header from point-blank range as the game headed to overtime.
Â
"The team started well controlling tempo right from the opening whistle, but we got away from to end the first half," added Smith. "After the half time and into the OT's the team was able to regroup and got back to truly great play that caused LMU some problems and the eventual game winner."
The first overtime was evenly played, but Ries nearly claimed the game-winner in the 100th minute as she had Pruitt beat. But she sent one wide looking for the far post.
Â
"It was great to see our seniors, Hannah Griffiths Boston and Ariel Viera, team up for the first goal, and for Taryn Ries to get the game-winner after some big time composure from Lucy Davidson to extend our possession and find Taryn was fantastic," Smith said. "I was really proud of the team tonight sticking with a style of play that suits us well and converting, especially against a very tough opponent in LMU."
The Pilots next return home to host the Gonzaga Bulldogs next Saturday night, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. at Merlo Field.
