PORTLAND, Ore. --- Down 10 at the half, the Portland Pilots used a second-half comeback before prevailing in overtime to claim a dramatic 71-64 win over the Utah Valley Wolverines on Tuesday evening at the Chiles Center. The win improves the Pilots to 3-0 on the year, which is the best start to a season since 2010.
Â
The Portland comeback began in the third quarter with the help of a pair of three-pointers from sophomore Keala Quinlan, who came off the bench to spark the Pilots' offense. The Wolverines maintained their lead, but the Pilots cut the deficit to five points entering the final frame.
Â
UVU's Mariah Seals opened the fourth with a three-pointer, but the Pilots refused to go away. With six minutes left to play, freshman Maddie Muhlheim followed a lay-up from Quinlan with a clutch three to pull the home team within three. Moments later Muhlheim buried another one from deep, and just like that the Utah Valley lead was down to one.
Â
The Wolverines' Taylor Christensen then split a pair at the foul line to make it a two-point game, but with 44 seconds remaining Muhlheim was fouled as UVU went for the trap, meaning Muhlheim would be going to the line with a chance to tie it. And the Portland native did just that, calmly draining two free throws to level the score 59-59.
Â
At the other end of the floor the Pilots forced a missed, and a difficult corner three-pointer from Portland's Kate Andersen was off the mark as the two teams headed for overtime.
Â
Muhlheim began the extra time by burying another one from beyond the three-point arc, handing the Pilots their first lead since 3-0 early in the first quarter. Seals then matched the Muhlheim three with one from deep to tie the score once again, but Utah Valley struggled against the Portland defense and would score only two more points the rest of the way.
Â
Portland senior Rachelle Owens connected on a corner three to push the Pilot lead to four points, and free throws would seal it down the stretch, including two from freshman Josie Matz that made it a two possession game with only 26 seconds showing on the clock.
Muhlheim, a 5-7 guard out of Sunset high School, just missed a double-double with career bests of 17 points and nine rebounds. Owens added a career-high 13 points off the bench, while also claiming a career high of seven assists. Joining the career-high club was Quinlan, who chipped in with eight points.
Â
Julie Spencer contributed nine points and eight boards to help the Pilots out-rebound the Wolverines 42-32. Andersen registered eight rebounds, which also were a career-high.
Â
The Pilots struggled to get it going offensively in the first half as the Wolverines (0-2) came out with a zone defense, which they would stick with all night long. Utah Valley took a 35-25 lead into the break, but the Pilots emerged in the second half determined to climb back into the game.
Â
Portland shot 46.3 percent from the field, connected on seven three-pointers, and went 14 of 20 at the charity stripe. Seals led Utah Valley with 20 points, and the Pilots held the Wolverines to just 34.4 percent shooting. UVU also hit seven three's and shot 13-for-17 on free throws.
Â
The Pilots next head to Southern California for their first road game of the year, which comes Friday night against the UC Irvine Anteaters. Tip-off at the Bren Events Center is set for 7 p.m.
