LOS ANGELES, Calif --- Though the Portland Pilots leveled the match against LMU, after a two-set deficit, the Lions made a late comeback in the fifth set to prevail over the Pilots 3-2 in the Gersten Pavilion on LMU's senior day. The Pilots battled through the West Coast Conference match with set scores of 21-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-18, and 13-15.
After the Lions took the first two sets, Portland bounced back in the third set to push past LMU early by three points, headed by kills from senior Hannah Troutman and sophomore Katie Barker. The Lions produced a small run to close the gap and come within one of the Pilots, but Troutman produced back-to- back kills, followed by two kills from junior Reghan Pukis and an ace from Barker moments later to increase the score to 17-12. Troutman scattered three more kills between LMU points to push the Pilots to set point, with Barker and Williams recording a kill and an ace to help the Pilots secure the third set at 25-22.
Portland maintained their momentum with a short run in the fourth set to push ahead of the Lions by four, after both teams battled evenly to start. Troutman then produced three kills in a row, followed by an additional kill, after an LMU point to bring the Pilots into the final points of the fourth set. Though the Lions attempted to hold Portland away from leveling the match 2-2, Pukis added three kills of her own to make it 23-14 for the Pilots. Savannah Slattery and Meredith Teague rolled two aces and a kill into the center of Portland's court, disrupting Pukis' momentum, but a service error for the Lions would end the set to give the Pilots the 25-18 win.
In the final set, the Pilots again jumped ahead early to a 7-3 lead, led by two aces from freshman Carey Williams and a kill from Hannah Troutman. Moments later, the Lions would begin a last-minute comeback producing two short runs to even the set 11-11. LMU finalized the comeback surge by claiming the final four points to complete 3-2 match win.
Troutman led the Pilots with a double-double of 32 kills and 17 digs, marking a career high of kills for the Pilot. Sophomore Cali Thompson also recorded a double-double with 50 assists and 12 digs. Barker and Reich had 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
The Pilots will be back in action next weekend in the Chiles Center, facing ranked opponents San Diego and BYU on Nov. 9 and 10. Hannah Troutman, Sarah Savoca, and Morgan Robinson will also be honored on Saturday afternoon in the senior day match against the Cougars.
