MALIBU, Calif. --- The No. 12 Pepperdine Waves took advantage of two penalties en route to a 4-0 win over the Portland Pilots in the West Coast Conference women's soccer regular season finale played on a breezy Saturday afternoon at Rokus Field. The four Pepperdine goals came from four different players.
Â
The Pilots looked aggressive early in the first half, applying pressure in the final third and earning a corner kick in the second minute. But the Waves withstood the early outburst, and in the 33rd minute the head referee pointed to the spot after he ruled the Pilots had committed a foul inside the area. Bri Visalli, who leads the league in both goals and assists, then converted the PK as the home side took a 1-0 lead. It's the 13th goal on the year for Visalli.
Â
The lead would grow to 2-0 just before the half when Calista Reyes found the back of the net, and in the 63rd minute the Waves were awarded their second penalty of the afternoon. This time it was Jamie Van Horn who stepped to the spot to tuck it away, making it a three-goal cushion.
Â
Brie Welch capped the scoring for the Waves when she headed in her fourth goal of the season on corner sent in by Ashley Buck.
Â
The Pilots (5-13-1, 2-7-0 WCC) were forced to play most of the game without their starting goalkeeper as junior Rachel Lusby was forced to leave in the 27th minute with an injury. Lusby had played every minute between the pipes this season, and she was replaced by freshman Madison Zamora.
Â
Pepperdine (14-2-3, 8-0-1) clinches the WCC title with the win, and the Waves claim the league's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.
