SEATTLE, Wash. – The Seattle University Redhawks buried 16-of-28 three-pointers en route to an 89-76 victory over the Portland Pilots Saturday night at KeyArena. The Redhawks overcame a four-point halftime deficit to improve to 7-0 at home with the victory.
Freshman guard Marcus Shaver Jr. recorded season-highs of 20 points and six rebounds, while senior guard D'Marques Tyson added 18 points to lead the Pilots (4-7).
Wisconsin graduate transfer Jordan Hill led four Seattle players in double figures with 23 points. Matej Kavas added 18 points and Aaron Menzies finished with 16 points and eight rebounds for the Redhawks (8-5).
It was a shootout from the get-go as both teams drained seven first half three-pointers before the Pilots used an 8-0 run to close the period with a 42-38 lead. Tyson buried his third three of the period to beat the shot clock in the closing seconds to give the Pilots momentum into the break.
Portland drained 7-of-10 three-pointers and shot 61 percent from the field in the first half, but cooled off after the break and made just 1-of-7 from beyond the arc and needed a late flurry of field goals to finish the game at 51 percent overall.
Seattle used an 11-0 run early in the second half sparked by strong interior play from Menzies to take a 49-44 lead. The Redhawks then pushed the margin to double digits at 60-50 on a Menzies transition dunk.
Seattle made 9-of-14 second half threes and shot 61 percent overall after the break. The Redhawks finished at 54 percent overall.
The teams had 10 lead changes and five ties in the first period. Seattle kept pace with the Pilots early by gaining a 14-7 edge in first half second chance points.
Sophomore Josh McSwiggan reached double figures for the tenth time this season with 11 points for the Pilots.
Senior center Philipp Hartwich blocked four shots and is now just one shy of tying the Portland career record for blocks. He has 120 overall and will tie Thomas van der Mars (121, 2011-15) with his next blocked shot.
