PORTLAND, Ore. --- After the game remained close for most of the afternoon, the Weber State Wildcats used a big fourth quarter to prevail over the Portland Pilots 91-70 at the Chiles Center on Sunday. Sophomore Kate Andersen led the Pilots with 14 points, while Larryn Brooks exploded for 33 points for the Wildcats.
Â
Brooks and the Wildcats (8-2) were on fire to open the game, but the Pilots (4-6) hung around with the help of early offense from Andersen and Darian Slaga. Slaga knocked down a couple from the field in the first quarter, including a three-pointer, and Julie Spencer added one from behind the arc as the Pilots jumped out to a 10-4 advantage. Weber State responded with an 11-0 run to surge ahead before taking a 28-21 lead into the second quarter.
Â
Weber State hit their first seven three-pointers of the game as their lead swelled to 19 points in the second frame. The Pilots remained unfazed and had the deficit down to just 11 as they headed to the half.
Â
Portland continued its momentum into the third as they connected from the free throw line, and Andersen buried a pull-up, mid-range jumper to make it a 55-51 game, courtesy a 15-4 run. The Wildcats tried to pull away from there, but the Pilots refused to falter and were still within five points late in the period when Ashley Gray hit a lay-up on a nice pass from Andersen.
Â
But that's as close as the Pilots would get as Brooks continued to drain shots from all over the court, helping the Wildcats out-score Portland 25-11 in the fourth quarter. Brooks finished 12 of 19 overall and was seven of 11 on three-pointers. As a team, Weber State shot 52.5 percent from the field and combined for 13 from deep.
Â
The Pilots were solid at the free throw line, going 24-for-28, but Portland connected on just two three-pointers out of 18 attempts, and shot 33.3 percent on the day. UP out-rebounded the Wildcats 43-31, which included a 19-5 edge in offensive boards.
Â
Portland's Lisa Kaempf was perfect on the day, shooting four of four from the floor and four of four at the charity stripe, en route to 12 points off the bench. Spencer produced 11 points and collected a team-best eight rebounds, while Slaga, Gray, and Josie Matz just missed scoring in double digits, finishing with nine points each.
Â
The Pilots next host Saint Francis (Pa.) on Wednesday afternoon in their final non-conference game of the season. Tip-off at the Chiles Center is set for 1 p.m.
