PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots raced to a 13-0 lead to open the game, but the Cal State Fullerton Titans controlled the action the rest of the way for a 76-66 victory Wednesday night at the Chiles Center. Josh McSwiggan and Philipp Hartwich led the Pilots with 15 points each to pace the Pilots.
In addition to a career-high scoring night, Hartwich added seven rebounds and six blocked shots. Franklin Porter was also in double figures with 10 points.
The Titans (5-3) were led by junior guard Khalil Ahmad who finished with 24 points and Kyle Allman with 21.
The Pilots (3-6) entered the contest ranked No. 7 nationally in three-pointer percentage at nearly 44 percent as a team, but struggled from beyond the arc on Wednesday. After making their first three attempts from downtown, Portland finished just 5-of-24 overall and 1-for-16 in the second half. The Pilots had not made less than nine three-pointers through the team's first eight games.
McSwiggan, Porter and Marcus Shaver Jr. each hit their first three-pointer and a Porter runner in the lane made it 13-0 Pilots five minutes into the action. The whittled the margin down by forcing Pilot turnovers with a have court zone trap and cut the deficit to 33-32 at the half.
Fullerton carried the momentum into the second period as a layup in traffic by Allman gave the Titans their first lead of the game. Ahmad buried a trio of three-pointers shortly thereafter to push the margin to 49-39.
One of Hartwich's six dunks spurred a 6-0 run capped by a pair of Malcolm Porter free throws to cut the margin to 62-58 with five minutes remaining. Allman and McSwiggan traded layups on the next two possessions, but the Pilots struggled to convert offensively and Fullerton finished the game 20-of-27 at the foul line to finish it off.
The Titans held a 35-29 rebounding margin and a 14-1 edge in second chance points. The Pilots shot 43 percent overall and made 15-of-22 free throws, while Fullerton finished at 46 percent overall and 6-of-14 from three-point range. They entered the game shooting 26 percent from three-point land.
The Pilots next take the court against the San Jose State Spartans on Saturday at the Chiles Center.
