STOCKTON, Calif. --- Portland's Kaylie Van Loo poured in a career-high 26 points, Hannah Mattson added 16 and the Pilots pulled away from the Pacific Tigers in overtime to win 78-71 at the Alex G. Spanos Center on Thursday night. Van Loo claims a career-high in points for the second straight game after scoring 23 the last time out.
Â
The Tigers (9-17, 5-10 WCC) led for most of the game before the Pilots (6-20, 4-11 WCC) put together a solid fourth quarter to mount a comeback. The Pilots trailed by as much as seven in the final frame, but when Van Loo hit a lay-up while getting fouled, Portland had come all the way back following her free throw.
Â
Pacific then answered with a jumper from Chelsea Lidy, who was on fire in the fourth period, but Van Loo matched Lidy with a jumper of her own. Lidy would hit another mid-range shot, but this time Holly Blades had the answer with an angle three-pointer to give the Pilots a 63-62 lead with :58 showing on the clock.
Â
At the other end it was Lidy again to put the hosts back on top with less than 30 seconds left, but as was the case all night long Portland responded with Van Loo, who hit a clutch, pull-up jumper in the lane to hand the Pilots 65-64 edge as the clock reached 13 seconds.
Â
A missed three-pointer by the Tigers then forced Pacific into fouling Julie Spencer, who calmly hit a pair of free throws to make it a 67-64 game with only two ticks left. And just when it appeared the Pilots would leave Stockton with a win, GeAnna Luaulu-Summers was fouled on a desperation three-point attempt, sending the junior guard to the line with a chance to tie it with a half second left.
Â
Luaulu-Summers hit all three free throws to somehow send the game to overtime.
Â
But the extra period was all Portland as the Pilots out-scored Pacific 11-4 to secure the overtime win. The win is Portland's second straight, and it came despite losing two players to fouls. The Pilots were also without the services of starting forward Ashley Gray, who left the game with an injured ankle.
Â
Van Loo went 10-for-13 at the charity stripe, giving the senior guard 10 free throws in a game for the third time this season. She also corralled six boards and handed out four assists.
Â
Mattson matches a career-high in points, while registering a career-best seven boards. Spencer finished with 13 points and seven rebounds before fouling out, and Blades added eight points and seven rebounds. Sara Zaragoza also had seven boards as the Pilots out-rebounded the Tigers 44-34.
Â
Portland shot 45.6 percent for the game, while holding Pacific to just 36.8 percent shooting. Lidy scored 21 points, and Emily Simons collected a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Â
The Tigers led the Pilots 16-9 after the first quarter, but the Pilots closed the gap to four points at the half after trailing by 13 points in the second period. The third was evenly played, but Pacific took a seven-point lead into the final quarter.
Â
The Pilots next travel to San Francisco where they'll face the Dons on Saturday at 2 p.m. at War Memorial Gym.
