PORTLAND, Ore. – The San Francisco Dons defeated the Portland Pilots by a 65-51 margin in West Coast Conference basketball action Saturday night before 3,259 fans at the Chiles Center. The Dons completed the season sweep over the Pilots and improve to 19-10 overall and 9-7 in WCC play. Portland falls to 9-19 and 2-14 in the conference.
Sophomore guard Jazz Johnson finished with a team-high 18 points for the Pilots, while Xavier Hallinan and D'Marques Tyson added eight each.
Chase Foster led three Dons in double figures with 18 points off the bench, while Jordan Ratinho finished with 13 and Charles Minlend added 11.
There were three ties and six lead changes late into the first half before San Francisco closed the period on a 15-4 run. Minlend drained a three-pointer and just beat the halftime buzzer to give the Dons a 29-18 lead at the break.
Tyson and Johnson buried consecutive three-pointers to cut the deficit to 40-32 with 12:43 left in regulation, but San Francisco would grow the margin to as much as 15 as the Pilots went nearly six minutes without a field goal. The Dons maintained a double-digit lead over the final 10 minutes of regulation.
The Pilots held San Francisco to 37 percent shooting on the night and finished at 43 percent overall, but turnovers proved to be the difference. Portland had 19 turnovers which led to an 18-11 margin for the Dons in points off of turnovers. USF also made 14-of-17 free throws, while the Pilots finished just 7-of-15 at the line.
Junior center Philipp Hartwich blocked four shots for the Pilots and now has 82 for his career, passing current assistant coach Kramer Knutson for sixth place on Portland's all-time charts and just two shy of fifth place.
Portland will continue its home stand on Monday night when the Walla Walla Wolves visit for a non-conference meeting. The game will tip-off at 5 p.m. and admission will be free for the non-ticketed event. The Pilots will then complete their home schedule on Thursday against BYU at 7 p.m. It will be Senior Night for Ray Barreno, Jarrel Marshall and Alec Wintering as the trio will be honored during a pregame ceremony.
