BAKERSFIELD, Calif. --- After the Portland Pilots had taken a late lead, the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners scored three in the bottom of the eighth to escape with a 7-5 win in the finale of the four-game series on Saturday at Hardt Field. Portland freshman Chris Arpan went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored during the loss.
Â
And it was Arpan who led off the top of the eighth inning with a single and the score tied 4-4. He would move over to third on a double by Mike Hicks before Beau Brundage gave the Pilots (1-6) the lead with a sacrifice fly ball to left field.
Â
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Roadrunners (6-2) immediately responded in the bottom of the frame. The tying run also came on a sac fly, and the go-ahead run scored on single from Jake Ortega. Brandon Heinrich added some insurance with an RBI double, and Naithen Desnap overcame a lead-off walk in the top of the ninth to seal the win.
Â
Dewsnap (1-0) tossed 2.0 innings of relief to earn the victory.
Â
The Pilots took control of the game early with a three-run first inning off of CSUB starter Garrett Nimmo. Ryan Hoogerwerf drove in the first run with a double, while Dutton Elske and Arpan followed with RBI singles to give Portland a 3-0 lead.
Â
But like they would later, CSU Bakersfield answered in the bottom of the inning with four runs. Junior Felix provided the big hit, which was a go-ahead, two-run triple down the left field line.
Â
The score would remain 4-3 until the top of the sixth inning when Hicks brought home Devin Kopas with a sacrifice fly.
Â
Portland starter Corbin Powers lasted 4.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, while fanning five. Reliever Tate Budnick takes the loss after going 3.1 innings. He was charged with a pair of runs, and he was followed by Jake Hawken.
Â
The Pilots remain on the road next week when they travel north face the Seattle Redhawks on Tuesday. First pitch at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, Wash., is set for 5 p.m.
