PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland guard Kaylie Van Loo celebrated senior day with a team-high 15 points, but the San Diego Toreros ended the regular season with a 72-54 win over the Pilots on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. Sophomore Julie Spencer just missed a double-double for the Pilots, finishing with nine points and eight boards.
Â
The Pilots (6-23, 4-14 WCC) looked good in the first quarter as they jumped ahead early. Van Loo gave the home team its first lead with a lay-up, and Sara Zaragoza followed a San Diego bucket with a nice turn-around hook shot to keep the Pilots in front. Jojuan Carrington then made it a four-point game with a lay-up before the Toreros cut the deficit to two points just before the end of the opening period.
Â
After shooting poorly in the first frame, the Toreros (13-15, 7-11 WCC) began to connect from the floor in the second period to surge in front. USD out-scored the Pilots 28-11 in the quarter to take a 15-point lead at the half. The lead would grow in the third quarter before the Pilots attempted a late-run.
Â
Darian Slaga came off the bench in the final period to knock down some shots, including a three-pointer, to cut into the deficit, and Van Loo pulled the Pilots within 15 with a jumper and 2:48 left to play. But the clock would soon run out as the Toreros leave The Bluff with the win.
Â
Van Loo added five assists and three rebounds, while fellow senior Hannah Mattson chipped in seven points and a career-best eight rebounds. Carrington also finished with a career-high eight boards.
Â
Caroline Buhr matched a career-high with 17 points to lead the Toreros, who shot 45 percent overall. San Diego also made three three-pointers, with two coming from Cori Woodward, and the Toreros were 19 of 27 at the foul line.
Â
The Pilots shot just 31 percent, hit three three's and were 15-for-19 from the line.
Â
The game marked the final regular season appearance at the Chiles Center for the Pilots' four seniors, and Van Loo, Mattson, Holly Blades and Corissa Turley were honored with a pre-game ceremony.
Â
Portland next heads to the West Coast Conference Championships at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., where they'll get a rematch with the Toreros on Thursday afternoon.
