PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Brigham Young Cougars took control of the game from the opening tip and never looked back en route to a 77-38 win over the Portland Pilots in a West Coast Conference women's basketball game played on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center.
Â
It was a tough day shooting for the Pilots (4-19, 2-10 WCC) as BYU (14-9, 8-4 WCC) held the home team to just 20 percent from the field. The Cougars countered with 48 percent shooting, and were led by Kalani Purcell, who registered a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. BYU's Makenzi Pulsipher, who connected on three three-pointers during the third quarter, scored a game-high 16 points.
Â
Kaylie Van Loo led the Pilots with nine points, while Jojuan Carrington scored a career-best six points for the second straight game. Ashley Gray was Portland's top rebounder with eight boards.
Â
BYU out-rebounded the Pilots 42-31, hit eight from beyond the three-point arc and went 17-for-20 on free throws. The Pilots combined for four three-pointers and shot 14 of 18 at the foul line.
Â
Both teams struggled offensively in the first quarter as the Cougars led 14-3. BYU's lead stretched to 18 points at the half, and most of the Cougars damage came in the third period as they shot 60 percent during the frame, went 4-for-5 on three's and scored 30 points.
Â
The Pilots remain at home next week for a pair of WCC games, first hosting Saint Mary's on Thursday night at 7:00.
