PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilot's men's and women's track and field teams will head back up to Seattle this weekend to compete in the two-day Husky Classic in Washington's Dempsey Indoor facility. This is the biggest weekend of the Dempsey season and the Husky Classic promises to deliver dozens of NCAA Indoor qualifiers and record-setting times.
Friday evening the Husky Classic will begin at 4 p.m. with the 200-meters, distance medley relays, 5,000-meters, men's weight throw, and early flights of pole vault. Saturday's full day starts at 10 a.m. and the top sections of the distance events along with the finals of the sprints will begin at 3 p.m.
Typically one of the deepest, and fastest, meets on the collegiate track calendar, the Husky Classic produced 50 marks that ranked in the top-25 nationally by the end of the 2016 indoor season, including the fastest women's 3,000-meters in 2016 (Boise State's Allie Ostrander; 8:54.27) and the fastest men's 5,000-meters (Oregon's Edward Cheserek; 13:35.86). Ten of the 25 fastest women's 5,000-meter times were set at the Husky Classic last year, as were nine of the top-25 men's 5,000-meters, and seven of the top-25 women's 3,000-meters. A total of 64 sub-four-minute miles have been run at the Husky Classic since 2006.
Â
Portland's Lauren LaRocco, Anna Farello, and Taryn Rawlings, who each rank nationally in the 3000 meter at 16, 44, and 70 respectively, will return to the track this weekend in Seattle. LaRocco and Rawlings both broke school records in their events at the UW Invite earlier this season.
Â
"Everyone is excited for this meet," said women's head coach Ian Solof. "Training has gone well despite the challenging weather and I can see a huge difference in peoples' fitness levels. We are looking forward to going after some NCAA qualifying times and more school records."
Â
On the men's side, Jeff Thies and Tristan Peloquin, who both also set new personal records at the UW Invite in the 3000 meter, will also return to compete in the Husky Classic this weekend, accompanied by Danny Martinez, Tim Ball, Brady Johnson, and Noah Schutte.
Â
"We are looking forward to seeing a spike in performance this week after a good four-week training block," said men's head coach Rob Conner. "All the guys are starting to look pretty sharp in practice so I think we can anticipate personal best performances."
