PORTLAND, Ore. --- Portland's Kevin Wade provided the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning and reliever Marty Luckenbach sealed the win as the Pilots completed a two-game sweep of the Seattle Redhawks with a 5-3 victory on Wednesday at Joe Etzel Field. Wade finished with two RBI's and scored a run.
Â
With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Wade stepped to the plate with one out and Beau Brundage on second base. Wade then drilled a 1-2 pitch into the left-center gap, easily scoring Brundage to hand the home team a 4-3 lead. A batter later, Wade scored an insurance run when he came around to make it 5-3, courtesy a Seattle error.
Â
The Redhawks did start the top of the ninth with a lead-off double, but Luckenbach capped the win with three straight outs, including a game-ending strikeout.
Â
Luckenbach (1-0), who notched the save during Portland's 6-3 win on Tuesday, worked a scoreless inning and a third. He allowed only the one hit and fanned three. He also came in with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to register a huge strikeout, when the Redhawks had the bases loaded and the score tied.
Â
Seattle reliever Zach Wolf (0-5) is stuck with the loss, and he was the third Seattle (7-13) pitcher on the day.
Â
The Pilots (4-16) fell behind early after the Redhawks scored one in the top of the first, but Portland answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. With Matt Kelly on third, who had previously begun the inning with a base hit, Wade drilled a single off the pitcher, which allowed Kelly to score and even the game 1-1.
Â
Portland then surged ahead with two runs in the bottom of the second, which scored on a Seattle error. Dutton Elske hit a lead-off single, Cal Webb followed with a walk, and both crossed home plate when third baseman Jake Taylor's throw on a bunt from Ryan Kim ended up in right field.
Â
The Redhawks got one back in the sixth inning when Taylor left the yard with a solo home run to left field. And then with the score 3-2 in the top of the eighth, the Redhawks scored a run without the benefit of a hit, tying the score 3-3. That's when Luckenbach entered the game and prevented any more damage.
Â
Starter Tate Budnick worked an effective 6.0 innings before giving way to the bullpen. He scattered seven hits, allowed two runs and struck out four.
Â
The Pilots next travel to Moraga, Calif., for a three-game West Coast Conference series with the Saint Mary's Gaels at Louis Guisto Field. The series begins with a game at 3 p.m. on Friday, first pitch on Saturday is set for 2 p.m., and Sunday's finale is scheduled for 1 p.m.
