LAS VEGAS – Portland dropped an 81-58 decision to No. 18 ranked Saint Mary's on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the 2017 West Coast Conference Basketball Championships hosted at the Orleans Arena. The Pilots close the season with an 11-22 overall record, while the Gaels improve to 27-3.
Sophomore guard Jazz Johnson led Portland with a game-high 26 points on 9-of-15 shooting. He also grabbed six rebounds.
Lake Oswego, Ore. native Calvin Hermanson led the Gaels with 21 points, while Jock Landale finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Portland led by six points early in the first half, but a 16-2 Gaels run put them ahead by double digits. The Pilots closed the period with a 6-0 run to cut the margin to 32-27 at the half.
Saint Mary's pushed the margin back to double digits to open the second half, but the Pilots used a 6-0 run midway through the period to pull within 49-43. The Gaels then got hot from the perimeter and drained their next five three-point attempts to put the game out of reach.
One of the most efficient offensive teams in the nation, Saint Mary's finished the game at 57 percent from the field and made 11-of-27 three-pointers, while the Pilots finished at 38 percent overall and 5-of-15 from beyond the arc.
The Gaels also used their size to gain a 38-23 rebounding advantage and 38-18 margin in points in the paint.
Saint Mary's, the tournament's No. 2 seed, advances and will face No. 3 BYU in the semifinals on Monday night.
Portland seniors Jarrel Marshall and Ray Barreno took the court for the final time on Saturday. Fellow senior Alec Wintering, a four-year starter, suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier this year but will still go down as one of the all-time Pilot greats after finishing his career second in school history in assists and steals.
