MCMINNVILLE, Ore. --- The Portland Pilot's men's track and field team opened their outdoor season today at the Linfield Icebreaker in McMinnville, Ore.
Freshman Reuben Kiprono took second overall in the men's 10k with a time of 30:32.67, while sophomore Michael Murphy and Cole Shugart, each running their first career 10k's, rounded out the top ten in 32:02.63 and 32:16.26, respectively. Redshirt freshman Andrew Jenck put forth a solid effort for a large PR of 33:34.43.
"The guys did a great job tonight," said men's head coach Roc Conner. "Reuben ran a great race, erased a 100m deficit at the halfway point, and took the lead with three laps remaining, but was eventually outkicked on the last lap. Murph and Cole were in their first ever 10k's. Murph ran even and had a shot to break 32:00. Cole ran conservatively, coming through the 5k in 16:37 and closed in 15:39, big negative splits. Andrew did a great job and dropped his PR by a full minute."
The Pilots will next compete at the Willamette Open tomorrow beginning at 10:00 a.m.
