STOCKTON, Calif. --- Portland sophomore starter Kevin Baker was impressive on the hill recording a career-high 13 strikeouts, but the Pacific Tigers prevailed 2-0 over the Pilots to claim the West Coast Conference series on Sunday afternoon at Klein Family Field. Baker's previous career-high for K's in a game was 11, which the right-hander had done twice this season.
But it wasn't enough as the Pilots (9-34-1, 5-16 WCC) could only put together three hits on the day. One of those hits came in the top of the ninth inning when Beau Brundage reached base with a one-out single. But Pacific (15-26, 4-17 WCC) closer Vince Arobio induced a foul out and a fly out to preserve the win, and earn his sixth save of the season.
The game's only two runs came in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Matthew Tarantino doubled down the left field line before a Portland error gave the Tigers runners on the corners. Danny Mayer then followed with a double, driving in Tarantino and giving the home team a lead they'd would hold on to. A sacrifice fly off the bat Lucas Halstead after Mayer's double provided a little insurance.
Baker (3-5) scattered only four hits, and one of the runs scored in the sixth was unearned. He tossed all 8.0 innings to register his first career complete game.
Pacific's Ricky Reynoso (4-5) also worked 8.0 innings, holding the Pilots to just two hits. He struck out six and walked two.
Portland threatened in the top of the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with no outs. But Reynoso escaped unharmed with a strike out and a double play to keep the game scoreless.
The Pilots next take a week off for final exams and graduation before returning to the field to host Oregon on Tuesday, May 9.
