PORTLAND, Ore. --- University of Portland women's basketball alum Natalie Day was named the tournament MVP as she led the Virgin Islands to the gold medal at the Women's Centrobasket Championship 2017, which concluded on Sunday in St. Thomas. The Virgin Islands finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, and Day averaged a double-double with per game marks of 18.6 points and 11 rebounds.
The Virgin Islands now advance to participate in the AmeriCup 2017 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which is scheduled for August 6-13.
Day, whose mother was born and raised on the Virgin Island of St. Thomas, spent three years (2009-12) with the Pilots after attending Howard University her freshman year. She landed on the All-West Coast Conference First Team twice, and she averaged 14.7 points and 6.5 rebounds during her career on The Bluff. Day poured in 1,309 points in 89 career games at UP, which ranks 11th on the all-time program scoring chart.
