VIDEO | University of Portland Celebrates Women's Basketball 1990's NCAA Teams at Reunion Weekend
During Reunion Weekend at the University Portland,
we celebrated the mid-1990's UP Women's Basketball teams that advanced to four consecutive NCAA Tournaments from 1994 to 1997.Â
The 1993-94 team is the one that started this Golden Era of Women's Hoops on The Bluff. Despite finishing fourth in the West Coast Conference regular season with a 17-12 record (7-7 WCC), the team went on to win the WCC Tournament to earn an NCAA appearance. The following two seasons, the Pilots finished with a 23-7 record (12-2 in the WCC) and eventually earned at-large bids to the Big Dance.
The 1996-97 season saw the Pilots finish the regular season 27-3 with a perfect 14-0 conference record in the regular season. Despite an overtime loss to San Francisco in the West Coast Conference final, they went on to their fourth straight NCAA Tournament.
This era of Pilots' Women's Basketball included four University of Portland Hall of Famers (Amy Claboe, Kristin Hepton Spear, Deana Lansing and Laura Sale), three straight WCC Players of the Year (Claboe 1994-95, Sale 1995-96, Lansing 1996-97), and Head Coach Jim Sollars was the WCC Coach of the Year in 1997.
