DAVIS, Calif. --- After dominating possession for most of the game, the Portland Pilots earned a 1-0 win over the UC Davis Aggies on Friday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer game at Aggie Soccer Field. Under heavy pressure from the Pilots, the Aggies scored an own-goal in the 82nd minute, which would prove to be the difference.
Â
On that scoring play, Portland (2-1-0) sophomore Kimberly Hazlett drove down the right sideline to produce a well-hit cross into the box. That's where senior Maddie Dieker applied strong pressure to the UC Davis defender to force the own goal. The Pilots then continued to press throughout the rest of the second half before holding on for the shutout, their first of the young season.
Â
Freshman Taryn Ries and senior Hannah Griffiths-Boston led consecutive attacks in the first half, each producing shots that just missed wide of the Aggies' (0-3-0) goal.
Â
In the 40th minute, UC Davis' Daniella Giancarli struck a shot from distance to test junior keeper Rachel Lusby, who recorded the save. Dieker then attempted the final shot of the first half, which also missed just wide, sending both teams into the locker room at even at 0-0.
Â
The game would remain scoreless for the majority of the second half, despite both teams creating chances. Sophomore Rylee Seekins forced Aggies' keeper Alexis Smith into making a save in the 48th minute, and Lusby recorded another save less than a minute later.
Â
Lusby came through with a couple more shutout-preserving saves before the end of regulation, and  Hazlett hit a few shots that just missed the target.
Â
Lusby finished with four stops on the day to claim her first blank sheet, and Hazlett led the Portland attack with three shots.
Â
The Pilots next head to Irvine, Calif., for a Monday night contest with the UC Irvine Anteaters. Kickoff is set for t p.m.
