CORVALLIS, Ore. --- On a night the Pilots dominated for the entire 90 minutes, Rey Ortiz provided the game-winner as Portland shutout the Oregon State Beavers 1-0 in a non-conference men's soccer match played on Sunday at Lorenz Field. It's the third shutout on the year for the Pilots, and Ortiz collects his first game-winner.
Â
Jason Romero assisted on the Ortiz goal when he made it around the edge of the Oregon State backline and laid it off to his teammate. Ortiz did the rest, tucking it away for his third goal of the season, handing the Pilots a goal advantage in the 73rd minute.
Â
Portland would easily hold on from there to improve to 4-2-0. The Beavers drop to 2-5-0.
"Very proud of our program for securing a total team victory tonight in an venue that is very challenging due to numerous variables outside of our control," said Portland head coach Nick Carlin-Voigt. "I thought we controlled the game and played it on our terms, while dealing with their direct play and talented forwards. I challenged the guys all week to have a complete defensive performance and they answered the call posting a shutout and really rolling up their selves to grind out an important road victory."
Â
The Pilots created several chances during the first half, which ultimately ended with the score tied 0-0. Portland's first shot of the night came from Romero, who had an attempt blocked in the fifth minute. The Pilots were then unable to capitalize on the ensuing corner kick.
Â
Kris Reaves forced OSU keeper Ryan Vincent into making a save with a shot in the 13th minute, and Gio Magana-Rivera put a shot on-target in the 23rd minute, which was also saved by Vincent. The Pilots ended the first half with a 10-4 advantage in shots.
Â
The second half was much like the first as the Pilots continued to compile shots. Vincent denied a shot from Erik Edwardson in the 55th minute, and Caua Soares hit one that was also stopped by Vincent moments later. Vincent then provided another save on another attempt from Soares in the 64th minute to preserve the 0-0 tie.
Â
The shutout is the third this season for Portland senior goalkeeper Paul Christensen, who was helped by a backline that limited the Beavers to just seven shots. Christensen is sixth all-time at UP with 17 clean sheets.
"Elite teams win in different ways and 1-0 wins are very important in our sport," added Carlin-Voigt. "We had guys step up tonight as I have compete faith and trust in our whole roster. Shane Aranda was very solid and won his 1-v-1 battles, while Hanno Antoni put in a consistent performance in back. We felt we had a goal disallowed and the guys showed tremendous character to fight back and find the game winner.
Â
"Credit to Jason Romero for making a very unselfish final pass to Rey Ortiz who finished with class, confidence and composure. We talked about winning the state of Oregon and we accomplished that tonight. We still have room for improvement but you saw a very confident group tonight. We look forward to heading to California for an important road trip as we prepare to play a successful UCSB program."
Â
The Pilots remain on the road next week when they head to California for a pair of non-conference games. First the Pilots will be in Santa Barbara to play the UCSB Gauchos on Saturday night at 7 p.m. Monday brings a trip to San Luis Obispo for a match against the Cal Poly Mustangs, which is also set for 7 p.m.
