SEATTLE, Wash. --- In game that was largely dominated by the Pilots, Larkin Russell scored her first goal of the season as Portland earned a 1-1 draw with the Seattle Redhawks on Friday night at Championship Field. It's the fourth career goal for Russell, a sophomore midfielder.
Â
After falling behind early in the first half, the Pilots responded by taking over possession and repeatedly creating chances. But the game would remain 1-0 in Seattle's favor until the 63rd minute.
Â
That's when the Pilots (3-6-1) earned a free kick from about 40 yards out, and sophomore defender Natalie Muth sent a ball towards the top of the box. It eventually found the feet of Russell, who collected it and buried a shot inside the left post to level the score 1-1.
Â
The Pilots continued to pressure the final third from there, and near the end of regulation the visiting side nearly produced the equalizer. Junior Hanna Armendariz had a shot from inside the box blocked, and redshirt-junior Kaycie Young hit a well-struck shot towards the top shelf from about 20 yards out. But Seattle keeper Mackenzie Curry made a diving, one-handed save to preserve the tie and send the match to overtime.
Â
It was more of the same in the extra period, and in the 91st minute Kimberly Hazlett sent in a stellar ball from right of the 18. Redshirt-senior Ariel Viera then hit the cross bar with a header, as the game remained even. Portland would send another shot high moments later, and Viera drove a ball towards the frame in the closing seconds from distance that was denied by Curry.
Â
Neither team was able to do much in the second overtime, and the clock would soon reach 110:00 with the score still tied 1-1.
Â
"From the SU goal it was all Pilots as we found our rhythm," said Portland head coach Garrett Smith. "We created chance after chance, but in the end we did everything but win the game and get the result tonight. We can take a bunch of positives from tonight's performance heading into conference play next week and we are headed in the right direction."
Â
Portland keeper Rachel Lusby was solid once again in goal, helping keep the Pilots in the match. She finished with a handful of saves, which included a big-time diving stop on a Seattle (4-4-1) free kick in the 14th minute. There wasn't much Lusby could do on the Seattle goal, which was scored by Jessie Ray in the 17th minute. Ray controlled a ball that was played over the top before tucking it away to hand the Redhawks the 1-0 lead.
Â
"It was a great comeback by the Pilots tonight after a slow start, but a great final 60 minutes plus overtime," noted Smith. "Also welcome back Lucy Davidson, who played restricted minutes in her return to play her first game of the 2017 season."
Â
The Pilots next travel to Northern California to open play in the West Coast Conference with a pair of games. First is a match on Friday afternoon against the Saint Mary's Gaels, which is slated for 3:30 p.m. in Moraga. On Sunday the Pilots will be in Stockton for a 1 p.m. kickoff with the Pacific Tigers.
