PORTLAND, Ore. – The Pacific Tigers continued their run in West Coast Conference men's basketball action Saturday night at the Chiles Center with a 66-54 win against the Portland Pilots. In a matchup of teams coached by former Portland Trail Blazer greats Terry Porter and Damon Stoudamire, the latter came out victorious as the Tigers picked up their third straight win.
The Pilots (6-13, 0-6 WCC) got a big boost from their reserves, outscoring Pacific by a 38-15 margin in bench points, but Portland starters combined for just 16 points. Senior D'Marques Tyson scored 14 off the bench, including 4-of-5 three-pointers. Freshmen Marcus Shaver Jr. and Malcolm Porter added 12 each. Senior center Philipp Hartwich grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.
Roberto Gallinat led the Tigers (9-10, 4-2 WCC) with 18 points, including a pair of three-pointers late that sealed it. Anthony Townes and Miles Reynolds added 12 each, while Jack Williams finished with 10.
Pacific shot 48 percent from the field for the game, outrebounded the Pilots 35-31 and committed just six turnovers. The Pilots struggled offensively and finished just 39 percent overall and 5-of-24 from three-point range.
Both teams started slow offensively before Portland took their first and only lead on a Josh McSwiggan runner nearly four minutes into the action. The Tigers then went on an 8-0 run sparked by a pair of three-pointers and would push the lead to 10.
The Pilot bench was able to provide a spark and cut the margin to 31-29 at the half as Tyson buried three three-pointers, Shaver Jr. scored eight first half points and Porter had seven, including a 40-foot buzzer beater to give the Pilots momentum.
Portland tied the game early in the second half on a Franklin Porter layup, but the Tigers went on a 13-2 run capped by three straight baskets from Townes. The Pilot bench once again triggered a comeback as Tyson scored five quick points and a pair of free throws by Shaver made it 46-42 with 9:29 remaining.
It remained in single digits until Gallinat beat the shot clock from long range on consecutive possessions to give the Tigers a 63-49 lead with less than four minutes to go.
Portland will hit the road next week for games at San Diego and Loyola Marymount. The Pilots visit the Toreros for a 7 p.m. tip-off Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion and then take on the Lions Saturday at 7 p.m. at Gersten Pavilion.
