WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.– Old Dominion defeated the Portland men's tennis team by a 4-1 margin on Saturday afternoon at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, hosted at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
The Pilots (0-3) faced a pair of tough opponents at the regional, also losing to Vanderbilt on Friday.
Portland senior Michail Pervolarakis, ranked No. 18 nationally, picked up a win in straight sets over Adam Moundir at No. 1 singles.
The Pilots lost the opening set of the other five singles matches and battled, but the Monarchs (4-2) were able to finish the match with the doubles points and singles straight set wins at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6.
Senior Mathieu Garcia pushed to a third set at No. 2 singles and was leading when the match was clinched. Junior Carlos Donat battled back to 4-5 in the second as well, while senior Alex Wallace lost a close match to Vincent Schneider by a 7-5, 6-4 margin.
"We played better today," Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. "Still disappointed with the results, but Mike had a decisive win against a good player. Mathieu was up a break in the third, while Carlos and Alex played much better today. They are both in need of more matches at this point after struggling with injuries in the fall. Obviously, we are not happy about the results of this tournament. We have lost as many matches at this point in the season as we did all of last season, but we knew we needed to bulk up our schedule. In a perfect world we would have push these matches back a couple of weeks, but it's not a perfect world and these are opportunities that came and went."
The ITA Kick-Off Weekend event features the top ranked teams from last year competing in 15 four-team regionals around the nation. No. 1 Wake Forest and Vanderbilt will face on Saturday afternoon and the winner will advance to next month's ITA Division I National Team Indoor Championships, hosted at Washington.
Portland will next
host the Princeton Tigers at Stafford Hills Club on Thursday, Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. The Tigers open their dual season with a home doubleheader on Sunday against Michigan State and Wagner before heading to Portland.
"We have another big one on Thursday against Princeton," Gross said. "We are better after this tournament experience and we have another opportunity to show that on Thursday."
