PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots overcame a nine-point deficit in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime, but the San Diego Toreros pulled out an 81-74 victory in West Coast Conference basketball action Thursday night at the Chiles Center.
Portland entered the game second in the WCC with more than nine three-pointers made per game, but started the game 0-for-6 until sophomore Josh McSwiggan's game-tying three with 13 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
The Pilots (6-10, 0-3 WCC) scored the first basket of overtime on a JoJo Walker layup, but were held scoreless the rest of the way as San Diego held on for the win.
Freshman forward Tahirou Diabate matched his season high with 13 points for Portland as he re-entered the starting lineup for the first time since November 30. Diabate was 6-for-8 from the field, but fouled out in 20 minutes of court action. Freshman guards Walker and Marcus Shaver Jr. added 12 points each, while McSwiggan finished with 10.
Junior transfer Isaiah Wright erupted with 30 points for the Toreros (12-3, 3-0) before fouling out in the closing seconds of regulation. Olin Carter III added 16 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer in overtime.
The Pilots entered the game ranked second in the WCC in three-point percentage and threes made, but were taken out of the perimeter game by San Diego. The team responded by pounding it inside for a 36-18 edge in points in the paint and 14-7 margin in second chance points. After being outrebounded by a 51-23 margin against San Francisco on Saturday, the Pilots gained a 38-35 margin on the boards against the Toreros.
Diabate sparked the Pilots early by scoring the team's first six points. San Diego then built a double-digit lead, but Portland got a boost off the bench as Shaver Jr. scored eight first half points and Rashad Jackson provided five as the margin was trimmed to 37-34 at the break.
Portland carried the momentum into the second half as a McSwiggan three-point play gave the Pilots their first lead since the opening minute at 44-42. Portland extended the lead to 46-42, but San Diego answered with a 21-6 run capped by a Carter III three and Isaiah Pineiro layup for a 63-52 lead with 5:50 remaining.
Wright's layup made it 69-60 with 2:14 left and the Pilots were down seven with under a minute remaining. Franklin Porter converted a pair of three-point plays to cut the margin to 71-69 with 23 seconds left, the latter fouling out Wright. Tyler Williams then made one of two free throws to set up McSwiggan's tying three. Williams was forced into a desperation fall away in the corner at the end of regulation that rimmed off.
Portland shot 41 percent from the field, finished 1-for-9 from three-point range and 21-of-32 at the foul line. USD was 42 percent overall, made 11-of-27 triples and 28-of-41 from the foul line.
Portland continues WCC play on the road Saturday against the Santa Clara Broncos. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Leavey Center and the game will be aired live on TheW.tv. Radio coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. on 910 ESPN-Portland.
