SANTA CLARA, Calif. --- Portland's Taryn Ries scored her league-best 14th goal of the season, goalkeeper Rachel Lusby came through with several clutch saves, and the Pilots took No. 7 Santa Clara to overtime, but the Broncos capitalized on a PK in the 92nd minute to escape Buck Shaw Stadium with a 3-2 win on Friday night.
Â
With the game tied 1-1 in the second half, Portland's (10-6-0, 3-2-0 West Coast Conference) Larkin Russell gave the Pilots the lead when she scored a world-class goal from about 25 yards out. Kimberly Hazlett and Ries sparked opportunity with a 2-v-1, and the ball fell to the feet of Russell just outside the 18. Russell then hit a perfectly placed shot that found the right corner of the net, handing the Pilots the 2-1 edge.
Â
The game would remain 2-1 with some solid defending from the Pilots, but the Broncos (13-2-1, 4-1-0 WCC) did equalize with a goal in the 72nd minute. After the Pilots handled a few balls sent into the area, Santa Clara's Kelcie Hedge eventually gained possession and sent a shot towards the top left corner of the frame that grazed the cross bar before finding the back of the net to make it 2-2.
From there neither team could produce the game-winner, but in the 90th minute the Broncos were awarded a PK after Portland was called for a foul inside the box, and Maria Sanchez, who plays for the Mexican National Team, had a chance to win it for Santa Clara. Sanchez went right with the shot, but Lusby was there with the clutch, diving save to send the match to overtime.
Â
In the 92nd minute the Broncos were given yet another PK, and this time Kelsey Turnbow tucked it away for the game-winner to give the win to the Broncos in an epic match between the long-time WCC rivals.
Â
Lusby finished with a season-high 10 saves.
Â
The Pilots survived a few scary moments early before settling in to control the run of play for extended stretches. The Pilots created a handful of decent opportunities throughout the first half, including in the 20th minute when Natalie Muth played a stellar through ball to Ries, just inside the box. But the Santa Clara keeper, Melissa Lowder, came off her line to deny the attempt, keeping the game scoreless.
Â
Moments later the Broncos claimed the game's first goal, after a few chances inside the area. Turnbow sent in a cross, which was controlled by D.B. Pridham with a deft first touch. She then found the back of the net to hand the home side a 1-nil lead with her first goal of the year.
Â
The Pilots responded, and when Hazlett was fouled inside the 18-yard box trying to receive a dangerous ball from Hanna Armendariz, the head referee pointed to the spot. Ries then stepped up and slotted one in to level the score 1-1 in the 30th minute.
Â
The match would remain tied, thanks to a brilliant save by Lusby in the 42nd minute. A nice pass created a one-v-one for Sanchez, but Lusby was there to provide the huge stop, as the two teams headed to the locker room at the break level.
Â
The Pilots next make the short trek to San Francisco to face the USF Dons on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff at Negoesco Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
