PORTLAND, Ore. --- Junior Jasmine Garibay sent the Pilots over Loyola Marymount 1-0 with a goal in the 57th minute as Portland blanked the Lions in a West Coast Conference women's soccer played on a wet Friday night at Merlo Field. It's the second goal and second game-winner for Garibay this fall.
Â
Her goal was on a well-hit, low-driven shot from inside the 18-yard box early in the second half.
Junior Kimberly Hazlett attacked down the right sideline to take on two LMU (3-11-4, 1-4-1 WCC) defenders and sent in a cross towards fellow junior Rachel Khaw. The ball was deflected backwards to Garibay, who was left unmarked and able to finish the loose ball into the back of the net.
Â
Though LMU controlled the run of play early in the first half, the Pilots (11-7-0, 4-3-0 WCC) did well to withstand the pressure and keep the game scoreless. Portland then settled into dominating long stretches of possession, and in the 43rd minute sophomore Ellie Walker got on the end of a bouncing free kick inside the area. The LMU defense recovered to apply pressure on Walker, who was unable to get a clean shot off against the goalkeeper Pruitt, and she missed just wide of the right post.
Â
Sophomore Ellie Winkelmann hammered a shot towards the frame in the 40th minute, but Pruitt provided a phenomenal save as the two sides entered the break scoreless.
Â
Coming out of the locker room in the second half, sophomore Taryn Ries was able to take on several LMU defenders by herself to get off a right-footed shot that rattled the top corner of the post. Moments later Ries got on the end of a free kick to force Pruitt to make another outstanding save, which again was denied by the cross bar after the touch from Pruitt.
Â
After Garibay's goal, LMU applied heavy pressure on the Portland backline, producing several chances. As Portland continued to clear chances and attempted to counter off Lion attacks, LMU was able to create one final solid chance in the 85th minute with a long shot from Maki Kono. The hit slipped though goalkeeper Rachel Lusby's hands, but fortunately ended up high of the crossbar.
Â
Portland notches its league-best eighth shutout of the year, and their 11 wins are the most for the Pilots since registering 17 victories in 2013.
Â
Lusby collected five saves, while Pruitt was forced into making eight.
Â
Portland will be back in action on Sunday at Merlo Field when they host No. 25 Pepperdine. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m., and the Pilots will celebrate their two seniors Hanna Armendariz and Rachel Lusby with a pregame ceremony.
