PORTLAND, Ore. --- Taryn Ries scored her fifth game-winner, Madison Carter collected her first career goal, and Ellie Walker provided two assists as the Portland Pilots dismantled the Saint Mary's Gaels to claim a convincing 3-0 win in a West Coast Conference women's soccer game played on Friday night at Merlo Field. The Pilots only allowed two shots on the night en route to their seventh shutout on the year.
Portland (9-5-0, 2-1-0 WCC) controlled the run of play all night long and did well to limit the Gaels' (6-5-2, 1-1-1 WCC) chances. The Pilots finished with 15 shots, while neither SMC attempt was on-target.
With the score tied 0-0 and halftime quickly approaching, the Gaels were called for a foul as the Pilots earned a free kick from left of the 18-yard box. As the clock approached 45 minutes, Portland hurried to get organized, and Walker sent in a nice ball towards the far post. That's where Ries jumped into the air to place the ball into the back of the net with a shot off the inside of her foot. The goal came with just five seconds remaining until the break.
The Pilots continued their domination in the second half, and in the 53rd minute Walker sent another brilliant ball into the area. This one found Kimberly Hazlett, who controlled it and placed a left-footed shot inside the left post to hand the Pilots a 2-0 lead. It's her fifth goal of the year, and Walker earned her second assist.
Carter capped the scoring when she received a pass from Natalie Muth near the top of the 18. The freshman took a touch, and hit one inside the left post, just out of the reach of the Saint Mary's keeper Maleah Milner. The goal handed Portland a commanding 3-0 lead, and Muth tallies her second assist of the fall.
Ries, who entered the night 10th nationally in goals, registers her 10th on the season. She also ranks sixth in the country in game-winners.
Saint Mary's was riding a four-game unbeaten streak, and the Pilots ended the Gaels' streak of three straight shutouts.
Next up for the Pilots is a visit from the Pacific Tigers on Sunday, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. at Merlo Field. The Portlandathon Marathon is scheduled for Sunday morning on Willamette Blvd., and fans coming to the game are encouraged to take Portsmouth Ave., via Lombard street.
