PORTLAND, Ore. -- The No. 15-ranked Saint Mary's Gaels pulled away late for a 73-61 West Coast Conference win over the Portland Pilots before 4,547 fans Saturday night at the Chiles Center. The Gaels shot 20 more free throws than the Pilots and scored 19 more points from the foul line on the night.
Senior center Jock Landale recorded a double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Tanner Krebs added 16 points for the Gaels (25-4, 14-2 WCC).
Freshman guard Marcus Shaver Jr. led the Pilots (10-19, 4-12) with 15 points, while Malcolm Porter and D'Marques Tyson added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Pilots were called for 28 fouls on the night compared to 18 for the Gales. Saint Mary's was efficient at the line converting 29-of-35, while Portland made 10-of-15 attempts.
Portland trailed by five at the half and pulled within six on a Philipp Hartwich dunk with 5:10 remaining, but Hartwich was called for a technical foul while running back up the court to foul out of the game. Portland head coach Terry Porter was then also hit with a technical foul and Krebs made all four free throws to push the lead to double digits.
The Pilots pulled within eight twice in the next minute, but the Gaels were able to extend the lead to double digits and hold on down the stretch.
The Gaels played the second half with senior point guard Emmett Naar who went down in the final minute of the first half to injury.
The first half featured five ties and five lead changes before Naar gave the Gaels a 36-31 halftime lead with a late layup.
The Pilots kept it close throughout a majority of the second half as Malcolm Porter scored nine points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the field in the period. Shaver Jr. added seven second half points, but free throws made the difference for the visitors.
Both teams shot 45 percent from the field. The Pilots made 5-of-14 three-pointers, while the Gaels finished 2-for-15 from beyond the arc. Saint Mary's gained a 32-25 rebounding edge, but the Pilots finished with a 16-3 margin in points off of turnovers.
