SEATTLE, Wash. --- The Portland Pilots men's and women's track and field teams concluded the first day of the MPSF Championships, Friday evening in the Dempsey Indoor. Senior Matt Welch (13:59.76) and junior Gabriel Haughey (14:01.25) led the Pilots with strong performances in the 5000m, finishing third and fifth overall. Both Welch and Haughey's times were good enough to launch them into the all-time UP indoor records at fifth and sixth all-time.
"Excellent day for the Pilots," said head coach Rob Conner. "Five of our six entrants ran pr's in the 5000. The guys have been training well and the times tonight show that. Matt and Gabe made big breakthroughs and Evert continues to show us he is the future of the program. I couldn't be happier and we are expecting more of the same tomorrow."
Freshman Evert Silva (14:07.64) and junior Simon Grannetia (14:21.00) also raced well in the 5000m with Silva placing 11
th overall and Grannetia 15
th. Sophomore Joe Horen recorded a new personal record, finishing with a time of 14:31.61 and Tristan Peloquin crossed the line 21
st (14:34.61).
On the women's side, senior Mathilde Sagnes finished 16
th overall in the 5000m with a time of 17:20.76.
The Pilots will be back in action tomorrow in the Dempsey Indoor, for day two of the MPSF Championships, beginning at 11:00 a.m. The meet will be streamed live on FloTrack and live results can be found on PortlandPilots.com
