MALIBU, Calif. – Senior guard D'Marques Tyson joined the Portland 1,000-point club, but the Pepperdine Waves erupted early and held on for a 75-64 victory over the Portland Pilots in West Coast Conference basketball action Saturday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.
Tyson buried his second three-pointer of the game with 11:45 left in regulation to become the 45th player in Portland history surpass the 1,000-point mark for the Pilots (10-21, 4-14 WCC). He finished with 12 points on the night.
Freshman guard Malcolm Porter also scored 12 points to lead Portland, while freshmen Tahirou Diabate and Marcus Shaver Jr. added 10 each.
Kameron Edwards paced the Waves (5-25, 2-16) with 22 points and nine rebounds, while Darnell Dunn added 13 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Portland was held scoreless for the first 8:29 of regulation and trailed by as much as 27 points late in the first half as Pepperdine took a 42-17 halftime lead. It marked the lowest scoring half of the season for the Pilots.
The Pilots opened the second half with a 10-2 run and then used a 16-2 run to bring the margin to single digits with 8:12 remaining. Tyson and Franklin Porter buried consecutive three-pointers and then Tahirou Diabate got a steal and went coast-to-coast for the dunk to make it 55-46. The Waves would push the margin back to double digits the rest of the way to secure the win.
Pepperdine owned the rebounding department with a 42-29 margin and 14-0 edge in second chance points. The Waves also gained a 34-22 advantage in points in the paint.
Portland was held to 42 percent shooting overall, while the Waves finished at 43 percent. Pepperdine had 20 assists and 14 turnovers to Portland's 16 assists and 17 turnovers.
Portland enters next week's West Coast Conference Basketball Championships in Las Vegas as the tournament's No. 9 seed and will face No. 8 Loyola Marymount in the opening round. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Orleans Arena. The winner will move on to face WCC champion Gonzaga on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the tournament quarterfinals.
