PORTLAND, Ore. --- Darian Slaga scored a team-high 23 points, Sara Zaragoza added a career-best 16 points, and Rachelle Owens dished 11 assists as the Portland Pilots cruised past the Pepperdine Waves 82-58 in the West Coast Conference regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. The 11 assists for Owens are a career-high, and they're the most by a Pilot in a game since 2011.
The Pilots (6-22, 3-15 WCC) opened the game on fire from the field and shot nearly 60 percent in the first half as they jumped out to an early double-digit lead. Slaga knocked down a couple of three's during the opening quarter, and Kate Andersen found both Julie Spencer and Zaragoza with some stellar passes that led to easy lay-ups. The Pilots ended the period with a 12-0 run to surge ahead by 20.
Portland carried that momentum into the second quarter, as they continued to hit shots from all over the floor, while Owens collected eight first-half assists. Slaga connected on another one from deep, and Maddie Muhlheim buried a three just before the half to hand the home team a 27-point advantage.
The lead would grow to 29 in the third before the Waves were able to cut the deficit down to 19. The Pilots re-grouped and soon pushed their edge back to 27 with the help of nine points from Slaga.
The Waves never got closer than 23 the rest of the way as the Pilots emptied their bench, and celebrated senior day with a win.
The Pilots finished the game at 52 percent shooting and registered an impressive 22 assists as a team.
Owens' 11 dimes missed matching a program single-game record by only two, and it's the most assists by a Pilot since ReZina TecleMariam had 12 against San Diego in 2011. Owens also had eight points and five rebounds.
Zaragoza was seven of nine from the floor en route to her career-high in points, while Muhlheim finished with four three-pointers and 14 points.
Portland held a sizable 39-27 edge on the glass over Pepperdine (9-19, 5-13 WCC), who were led by 24 points from Paige Fecske. The Pilots were active on defense and held Pepperdine's usual leading scorer, Yasmine Bacote-Robinson, to just 3-for-14 shooting.
The game was the final appearance at the Chiles Center for Portland's three seniors, and Ashley Gray, Owens, and Zaragoza were honored with a pre-game ceremony. Gray was solid on defense, and scored seven points.
The Pilots next travel to Las Vegas, Nev., for the 2018 WCC Championships at the Orleans Arena. Portland will open with a first round game against the Pacific Tigers on Thursday at 2 p.m.
