PORTLAND, Ore. --- Select Pilots concluded the first day of competition on Friday evening at the Lewis and Clark Open. Only three Pilot men ran in the 3000m steeplechase, with all three Pilots taking the top spots. Juniors Simon Grannetia and Noah Schutte placed first and second with times of 8:49.70 and 8:51.01, with sophomore Joe Horen finishing just behind them in third (9:13.76). Grannetia's time also pushes him into the UP outdoor 3000m steeplechase records at ninth all-time.
"Tremendous start for our guys in the steeple," said head coach Rob Conner. "Noah and Simon worked together, and it was very effective. They have been training hard and wanted to get in a practice race before Stanford."
Grannetia and Schutte's times now currently rank first and third in the West.
Portland sophomore Maya Murphy-Cook also competed in the high jump, recording a distance of 1.49m.
The Pilots will be back in action tomorrow at Lewis and Clark, for day two of the open, beginning with Vacek in the triple jump.
