PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Portland Pilots scored three runs during the final two innings to level the score and force extra innings with CSU Bakersfield, but the Roadrunners scored four in the 10th to prevail 7-3 on Friday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. The win gives CSUB a 2-0 edge in the four-game series.
Â
The Pilots (3-6) struggled to get their bats going for most of the game, but down 3-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning Dutton Elske sparked a late rally when he sent a pinch-hit single to right-center field that sent Collin Runge to third base. Chad Stevens then got the Pilots on the board with a sacrifice fly to right field, which scored Runge.
Â
A few batters later Ryan Kim made it a one-run game when he doubled to the gap in right-center. Elske scored all the way from first base, and it was a new ballgame at Joe Etzel Field.
Â
The ninth looked promising for the Pilots when they loaded the bases with no outs as Cody Hawken singled to left to lead off the frame, Jace McKinney reached on an error trying to sacrifice bunt, and Matt Kelly collected a bunt single. CSUB pitcher Naithen Dewsnap then recorded a clutch strike out, but the Pilots did tie the score 3-3 when Elske hit a sac fly to left.
Â
But that's all the offense Portland could produce as Dewsnap ended the inning with a strike out.
Â
In the 10th, it was the Roadrunners (4-7) who loaded the bases with nobody out, and they scored the go-ahead run on a costly Portland error. Mark Pena then pushed the lead to 6-3 with a two-run single, and CSU Bakersfield's final run scored on a balk.
Â
The Pilots did get a pair of runners on in the bottom of the 10th, but Dewsnap sealed the win with a game-ending strike out.
Â
Dewsnap (1-0) takes the win, despite blowing the save in the ninth. He fanned four in 2.2 innings, surrendered four hits, and didn't issue a walk. CSUB starter Davonte Butler was solid in 7.1 innings of work, holding the Pilots scoreless, while limiting the home team to just three hits.
Â
Portland reliever Jake Hawken (0-1) is saddled with the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, in 2.1 innings. Cameron Richman worked the final inning out of the bullpen, and starter Eli Morse tossed 6.2 innings. Morse scattered eight hits, let in three runs, two earned, and K'd four.
Â
CSU Bakersfield had taken their lead with a three-run fifth inning. Ryan Koch had the big hit of the inning, which was a two-run double to right-center field.
Â
Game three of the series is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday at Joe Etzel Field.
