PORTLAND, Ore. – San Francisco capitalized on five Portland errors to pull out a 6-4 win on Saturday in the second game of a West Coast Conference baseball series at Joe Etzel Field. The Dons, also 6-4 winners on Friday night, improve to 14-8 overall and 5-0 in league play with the win. Portland drops to 8-14 overall and 2-3 in league action.
San Francisco scored four runs in the top of the first inning to grab the early lead. Back-to-back doubles from Jonathan Allen and Riley Helland started the onslaught. Portland committed a pair of errors in the frame to extend the inning as two of the runs were unearned.
The Dons added another unearned run in the third to make it 5-0.
The bottom of the Portland lineup sparked a three-run third inning as Chad Stevens led off the frame with a walk. Dutton Elske followed with a double and Ryan Hoogerwerf walked to load the bases. Ryan Kim cleared the bases with a one-out double to make it a 5-3 deficit. Cody Hawken then hit a two-out single to left field, but Kim was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Portland starter Corbin Powers settled in after a tough start and went 6.0 innings, allowing six runs (three earned), on six hits two walks and six strikeouts. He took the loss and fell to 3-3 on the season.
Allen chased Powers with a leadoff home run to right center field in the seventh inning. Portland got that run back in the bottom of the eighth inning after Kim drew a leadoff walk. Daniel Lopez singled him to third and then Cody Hawken drilled a ball to the wall in center field for a sacrifice fly.
San Francisco reliever Scott Parker came on and shut the door in the eighth with back-to-back strikeouts and then earned his first save by putting the Pilots down in order in the ninth.
Dons' starter Riley Ornido improved to 5-0 on the season with the win. He tossed 7.0 innings and struck out nine. The Pilots collected five hits and four walks off of Ornido, while the four runs allowed doubled his season total entering the game.
Right hander Tate Budnick pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Pilots, striking out three and allowing just two hits.
The series concludes Sunday at Joe Etzel Field with first pitch scheduled for noon start. The game will be aired live on TheW.tv.
