LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Portland's Ryan Hoogerwerf left the yard with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning that momentarily pulled the Pilots with a run of LMU, but the Lions scored five in the home half of the frame before claiming the finale of the three-game series by an 8-2 margin at Page Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Pilots already had the series won after defeating the Lions on Friday and Saturday nights.
Â
Hoogerwerf's blast to right-center field came with Cody Hawken on first base after the junior outfielder had led off the frame with a single. It's the second home run this season for Hoogerwerf, and at the time made the score 3-2.
Â
But the Lions (18-22, 11-7 WCC) responded with a five-spot in the bottom of the inning, which included a three-run double from Kenny Oyama that allowed LMU to re-gain control of the scoreboard. Cooper Uhl and Dylan Hirsch also collected RBI's during the inning, courtesy a single and a run-scoring fielder's choice, respectively.
Â
Previously the Lions scored a run during the first, fourth, and fifth innings to surge ahead 3-0.
Â
Both teams finished with 10 hits, and Beau Brundage and Hawken each produced a pair of hits for the Pilots (15-23, 8-10 WCC).
Â
The loss goes to Portland starter Camden Muller (1-3), who lasted 4.0 innings. He surrendered three runs on five hits, and he was hurt by four walks. Three relievers followed Muller on the mound.
Â
LMU starter Josh Agnew (5-3) did enough in 7.0 innings of work to pick up the win. The Pilots combined for seven hits of Agnew, which included Hoogwerf's home run. Two relievers held the Pilots scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings.
Â
The Pilots held the Lions to a combined two runs during the opening two games, winning by scores of 6-2 and 2-1. During Friday's win, freshman starter Eli Morse went the distance on the hill, allowing only five hits while fanning a career-best 11.
Â
The series win over LMU is also the second straight WCC series win for the Pilots, who took two of three from BYU at Joe Etzel Field last weekend.
Â
The Pilots next host the Oregon State Beavers on Tuesday night at Ron Tonkin Field in Hillsboro. First pitch is set for 5 p.m., and the Beavers are coming off a three-game sweep of the Oregon Ducks.
