EUGENE, Ore. --- After the Ducks extended the game with a two-out, game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Portland Pilots scored two in the top off the 11th before holding on for a 9-7 win over Oregon on Monday night at PK Park. The Pilots collected 15 hits on the night, giving them a combined 32 hits during their last two games.
Â
The extra frames were needed after the Ducks scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth, and Kenyon Yovan hit the clutch homer in the ninth to even the score 7-7.
Â
After a scoreless 10th, Chad Stevens and Beau Brundage both singled to start the 11th for the Pilots (11-19). The Ducks then hurt themselves with a pair of passed balls, with the second allowing Brundage to score the go-ahead run. Ryan Kim then added some insurance when he sent an RBI single to left field.
Â
In the bottom of the inning, Portland's Connor Knutson retired the first two batters before Oregon got two on with two out. Knutson stayed calm, and the reliever induced a game-ending ground out to second base off the bat of Alex Andranovich to claim his third win of the year.
Â
Knutson (3-1) struck out three in 2.2 innings, allowing only one hit. Four Pilot pitchers combined to record 14 K's on the night.
Â
Brundage went 3-for-4 against the Ducks (18-13), with a pair of walks and three runs scored. In his last five games, the redshirt sophomore outfielder has gone 13-for-24 (.542), raising his average to a league-best .400 on the season.
Â
Freshman catcher Hunter Montgomery had a career night, registering three hits, which included his first career home run.
Â
The Pilots scored the first runs of the game after Stevens and Brundage singled and doubled, respectively, to put two on with one out in the top of the first inning. Cody Hawken followed with a single that scored both Stevens and Brundage to hand the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Â
The lead was short-lived as the Ducks matched the Pilots with two runs in the home half of the inning, before scoring another in the second to jump ahead 3-2.
Â
Portland immediately responded by scoring four runs on four hits in the top of the third to re-claim the lead. Daniel Lopez began the out-burst with an RBI double down the left field line, and a few batters later Collin Runge made it a 4-3 game with his second hit of the night, which scored Lopez. Montgomery then drove in a run with a base hit, and Henry Cheney capped the scoring with an RBI groundout, giving the Pilots a three-run cushion.
Â
Tate Budnick then came in from the bullpen to take over on the mound, and the righty retired the first eight batters he faced, five via the strikeout. Meanwhile Montgomery's home run in the top of the sixth pushed the lead to 7-3.
Â
The Ducks though climbed back into the game with a three-run eighth, with all three runs coming after a Portland error extended the inning.
Â
Connor White started the game on the mound for the Pilots, and was followed by Cameron Richman, Budnick, and Knutson.
Â
The Ducks used six pitchers, with the loss going to reliever Ryne Nelson (0-1), who took over to begin the top of the 11th.
Â
The Pilots next return to Joe Etzel Field to host the Brigham Young Cougars for a three-game West Coast Conference series, which opens on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
